Ernest Bisong is a genre-defying violinist whose artistry fuses jazz, classical, and contemporary African influences. Born and raised in Nigeria, he began studying classical violin at the age of nine under esteemed mentors such as Rachel Barton-Pine, Sir Godfrey Amoah, and Thomas Kanitz. His early foundation in classical music evolved into a deep passion for jazz and improvisation, leading to groundbreaking performances that redefined the violin’s role in contemporary music.

In 2008, Ernest captivated audiences at the HipHop World Awards in Lagos, performing alongside renowned producer Cobhams Asuquo. His expressive, horn-like approach to the violin established the instrument as a soulful voice in modern African music. In 2012, he performed at SXSW’s “African Showcase” and released his debut single, Bumble Bee, with IBK, a jazz-infused take on Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee. The track topped the Angels of Melody radio charts for a month, cementing his reputation as a pioneer of contemporary violin in Africa.

In 2013, Ernest became the first Nigerian to earn a performance diploma from ABRSM in London with distinction. That same year, Venture Career Journal Nigeria recognized him as “arguably Africa’s foremost contemporary violinist.” He has shared stages with international icons such as Mike Stern, Anita Baker, Marcus Johnson, and Marsha Ambrosius.

Now based in the U.S., Ernest continues to push the boundaries of jazz violin. He completed graduate studies at McNally Smith College of Music under the mentorship of Randy Sabien and Pete Whitman and has become a Codabow brand ambassador, endorsing Fishman, AES Strings, and Peak Music Stands.

Ernest regularly performs with the Minneapolis String Project, a genre-blending trio that draws from jazz, fusion, soul, and global influences. He also leads the Ernest Bisong Group, showcasing original compositions that merge jazz with the rhythmic and melodic sensibilities of his African heritage. Through his dynamic performances and innovative approach to the violin, Ernest Bisong continues to expand the instrument’s expressive possibilities while captivating audiences worldwide.
