Ernest Bisong is a passionate curator of music series dedicated to celebrating culture, artistry, and accessibility in the Twin Cities. As the curator of the Rondo Community Music Series, he plays a pivotal role in honoring the artistic and cultural heritage of the historic Rondo neighborhood in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Once a thriving epicenter for Black businesses, arts, and culture, Rondo faced profound disruption during the 1950s and 60s due to the construction of Interstate 94, which displaced hundreds of families and severed the community’s fabric. However, Rondo’s legacy of resilience, creativity, and community spirit has remained intact, and Ernest works tirelessly to elevate this legacy. Through concerts, panel discussions, and cultural events, the series shines a spotlight on the contributions of Black artists and musicians, fostering a deeper understanding of how music reflects and shapes community identity.
In addition to his work with the Rondo Community Music Series, Ernest plays a key role in another of the neighborhood’s most significant cultural celebrations: the Selby Avenue JazzFest. As project manager, he helps bring this dynamic one-day festival to life, attracting over 16,000 attendees who gather to experience the power of jazz in the heart of Rondo. The festival not only showcases world-class musicians but also strengthens the community’s connection to its artistic roots, ensuring that Rondo’s story continues to be told through music.
Beyond Rondo, Ernest also curates Jazz Access, an initiative designed to provide free, high-quality outdoor performances that offer a concert experience comparable to those held in prestigious venues. Jazz Access aims to make exceptional jazz music accessible to diverse audiences, providing an inclusive environment where listeners can enjoy world-class performances in an open and welcoming space.
Through his curatorial initiatives, Ernest Bisong continues to leave an indelible mark on the Twin Cities’ music scene. By creating platforms that honor both musical traditions and innovation, he ensures that world-class music remains accessible to all, enriching the cultural fabric of the region.
